Chapter 13

Alex filled William in on the text messages she and Evelyn had found between Nick and Kaine, and between Nick and Phil. The door opened and Evelyn stuck her head out, letting them know Billy was leaving and he insisted they leave as well.

They followed her inside, putting their water glasses in the kitchen. As they walked out of the kitchen, Alex glanced across the hall into Nick’s office, then slowed so she was trailing Evelyn and William. They walked through the front door, and before it closed behind her, Alex grabbed it. “Hey, I forgot to put the cushions away. I’ll be right back.” She went back into the house before Billy or Evelyn could protest, letting the door shut behind her. She raced down the hall, grabbed Nick’s laptop and charging cord, exited through the French doors, and put the laptop in the deck box before covering it with the seat cushions. Her heart racing, she checked to make sure the computer and cord weren’t visible. The lid dropped with a thunk.

I’m committed now, she thought ruefully. She slowed her breathing, brushed her hair back, and walked purposefully to the front door. Once Alex was back on the front steps, Evelyn entered a code on a keypad next to the frame, locking the door behind her.

Billy leaned against his Dodge Charger with his thumbs in his belt loops, waiting while the three of them climbed into Evelyn’s car before getting into his own. Evelyn watched in the rearview mirror as he followed them down the long, winding driveway. “Billy warned me not to come back here until they’ve made an arrest.”

“We need to get back in there,” William said. “We need to find out what kind of deal he had with Kaine. You know the code. Think we can sneak in later?”

Evelyn shook her head. “It’ll be logged, so Billy will know.”

“You said you’ve known each other all your lives. Wouldn’t he look the other way?”

Evelyn laughed. “You do remember he brought me in for questioning this morning, and I was there for hours, right? No, Nick’s house is off limits.”

“Alex told me you could access his text messages. Did he also back his computer up to the cloud?” he asked.

“No. He had an external drive connected to his router for backups, but that’s inside his house, too. I’m afraid we’re not going to get to his computer.”

Alex shifted in the front seat. “Well… I might have forgotten to replace the cushions on purpose.”

William reached from behind and squeezed her shoulder. “That’s my girl. What’d you do?” He noticed her purse at her feet. “Your bag’s not big enough and you weren’t carrying it, anyway.”

They turned into Evelyn’s driveway, where a white Jeep with the top open waited behind Alex’s car. “That’s Sue’s. She’s probably out back,” Evelyn said, then turned off the ignition and turned to Alex. “Well?”

“I might have put something in the deck box,” she hedged. “Under the cushions.”

Evelyn shook her head and her fingers tightened on the steering wheel.
